Griffin Museum of Science and Industry

Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is one of Chicago's largest indoor family attractions, with fourteen acres of exhibits focused on science, engineering, transportation, energy, and innovation. Its scale is part of the appeal. Children can move from a real U-505 submarine and the Henry Crown Space Center to hands-on exhibits, a towering tornado, a Coal Mine tour, and films inside a five-story dome.

General admission covers most permanent exhibits and selected temporary exhibitions, while several tours, films, labs, and special exhibitions require separate tickets.

The strongest age fit is roughly 4 through 14. Younger children can enjoy moving parts, large machines, colors, and cause-and-effect activities without reading every label. Elementary-age children are ready for the hands-on science and dramatic transportation displays.

Tweens and teens can explore engineering questions and add more detailed tours. Babies and toddlers can accompany the family comfortably, but a long visit will require breaks. Strollers are allowed, and a limited number of single and double strollers can be rented in the Entry Hall.

Wagons are not permitted.

Because the building is large, plan three to five hours, although the museum does not publish an average visit length. Arrive near opening if a Coal Mine tour, U-505 tour, special exhibition, or Giant Dome film matters to your family. Advance admission protects against capacity problems and reduces time at the ticket counter.

Check the calendar because regular hours are 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, but extended days, delayed openings, early closures, Thanksgiving, and Christmas affect the schedule.

The museum supports a practical day with children. Elevators and ramps reach public areas, a nursing room is inside Idea Factory, and all-gender restrooms are available on several levels. Museum Kitchen serves full meals, while Stan's Donuts and grab-and-go points provide faster options.

Families may also eat their own food in designated areas. Most of the experience is indoors and excellent for bad weather. A seasonal Museum Garden adds an outdoor break.

The underground garage reduces weather exposure but currently costs $22. Standard admission prices were not visible in a static official table during research, so use the official ticket cart for an exact family total and review the many free or discounted admission programs before paying.
