Sullenberger Aviation Museum

Sullenberger Aviation Museum is a strong rainy-day choice for families who like planes, engineering, or dramatic true stories. It sits beside Charlotte Douglas International Airport and displays more than 40 aircraft. The centerpiece is the actual Airbus A320 from US Airways Flight 1549, the aircraft involved in the Miracle on the Hudson.

Galleries use artifacts, stories, and interactive elements to explain flight and the aviation history of the Carolinas.

The museum is more engaging than a room filled only with signs and display cases. In the Honeywell Makerspace, visitors can explore, design, test, and create. Activities may include building gliders or solving an aviation challenge.

Monthly EDVentures add changing STEM projects for school-age children. The Makerspace is intended for all ages, but it may close for a school group or special event, so check its calendar before promising it to children.

Plan about two to three hours. Preschoolers may move quickly between the large aircraft, while elementary and middle-school children can spend more time with the engineering activities and Flight 1549 story. Older aviation fans may want longer.

The core visit is indoors, making it useful in heat, cold, or rain. Some spaces have low lighting, and aircraft noise from the nearby airport may be noticeable. The museum offers sensory kits and complimentary wheelchairs on a first-come basis.

Arrival is fairly simple because parking is free, but check the calendar for event closures before driving over. Backpacks and large bags cannot enter. Lockers are available, but packing light is easier.

Food and drinks are not allowed inside, and the current visit page does not list an on-site cafe or picnic area. Eat before the visit or plan a meal afterward. Current general admission is $25 for adults, $19 for ages 5 to 17, and free for children under 5, with sales tax added.
