About

Discovery Place Science is Charlotte's flagship science museum, occupying a massive building in Uptown and delivering one of the most comprehensive hands-on science experiences in the Southeast. It's been the city's top family destination for decades for good reason.

The main exhibit floor covers everything from electricity and engineering to life science and natural history. Kids can build and test structures against earthquake simulators, program simple robots, explore a full-scale anatomy theater, and investigate weather patterns. The scale model tornado is a crowd-pleaser — kids stand inside a vortex chamber and watch a miniature twister form around them.

The Living Rainforest is the museum's most underrated space. Three stories of tropical habitat with live plants, free-flying butterflies, and small exotic animals. Morpho butterflies the size of your hand drift past and occasionally land on kids' shoulders. Spend 30 minutes in here and everyone leaves calmer and more attentive to everything else.

The Kelly Space Voyager Planetarium seats 73 people in a dome for immersive sky shows. The programming rotates regularly — shows on black holes, the solar system, and seasonal star maps all work well for ages 5 and up. Reserve your show time online before arriving.

The IMAX Dome Theater shows both educational films and Hollywood blockbusters. The educational films (space, ocean, wildlife) are excellent for families — 40-50 minutes of spectacular footage that kids retain. Upcharge over base admission.

Practical note: plan for at least 3 hours. Four is better. The museum has a full café with kids' meals and decent adult food, which makes a full-day visit realistic.

Why Kids Love It

Discovery Place Science is the kind of museum where kids run ahead and parents jog to keep up. The main floor is a controlled chaos of hands-on exhibits — kids can build electric circuits, explore the human body, touch a tornado vortex, and dig through a simulated archaeological site. The 3-story living rainforest with free-roaming butterflies stops everyone cold.

The IMAX dome is one of the best in the Carolinas, and the Kelly Space Voyager Planetarium shows are genuinely spellbinding even for adults.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Book IMAX and Planetarium show times online before you arrive — they sell out on busy weekends and you can't always get same-day tickets at the door.
  • The Living Rainforest is tucked off the main atrium — many families walk past it. Don't miss it. Butterflies land on kids regularly.
  • The café on the lower level is decent and reasonably priced. Much better option than leaving for lunch and losing parking.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable shoes — this is a full walking museum
  • Snacks for toddlers (small ones eat while the big kids play)
  • Patience for IMAX lines on weekends
