Discovery Place Nature

Discovery Place Nature is the neighborhood natural science museum that anchors the Myers Park area of Charlotte, offering a smaller, more accessible version of the Discovery Place science experience focused specifically on the natural world. Located on Sterling Road near Freedom Park, it's a well-designed facility for the 1–10 age range that combines indoor exhibits with an outdoor Nature Play Garden.

The live animal exhibits are the emotional core of Discovery Place Nature. Snakes, turtles, frogs, insects, and other native animals are displayed in close-up, well-maintained habitats that give children the kind of detailed animal observation impossible at a distance zoo. For kids who respond to close-up animal encounters, this is a genuinely engaging experience that produces the long pauses of focused attention that good museum exhibits aim for.

The outdoor Nature Play Garden is the star attraction for young children in warm weather. Designed as a sensory and exploratory outdoor environment, it features natural play materials, garden areas, water elements, and unstructured space where children can engage with the natural world on their own terms. Unlike a typical playground, the Nature Play Garden encourages the kind of open-ended discovery that developmental researchers identify as crucial for young children.
