About
The Bar Harbor Shore Path is one of the most scenic and accessible walks in all of coastal Maine. This 0.75-mile footpath hugs the rocky shoreline of Frenchman Bay, offering continuous ocean views, cool sea breezes, and a front-row seat to the stunning natural beauty that makes Bar Harbor famous.
For families, the Shore Path is a nearly perfect activity: it's flat enough for strollers, short enough for toddlers, and interesting enough to hold older kids' attention. The rocky shoreline along the path is irresistible for kids who want to scramble, poke at tide pools, and watch lobster boats and ferries move through the bay. At low tide in particular, the exposed rocks are full of periwinkles, barnacles, and small crabs.
The path begins near the Village Green and winds past historic "cottages" (Bar Harbor's grand summer estates) before curving around to the Bar Island land bridge area. It's a lovely one-way walk, or you can retrace your steps back for a full out-and-back.
Early morning is the best time to visit — the light on Frenchman Bay is spectacular, the path is uncrowded, and the cool air makes the walk especially pleasant. This is the kind of free, beautiful, low-effort experience that becomes a daily habit for families staying in Bar Harbor for more than a day or two.
