Texas Capitol

The Texas Capitol gives families a free way to connect history, architecture, and state government in one central Austin visit. A guided tour lasts about 40 minutes and covers key areas of the building while explaining Texas history and the Legislature. Tours usually leave every 15 to 30 minutes.

Families who need more flexibility can use a self-guided brochure and move at their own pace through the building and grounds.

School-age children get the most from the experience. The State Preservation Board provides grade-specific materials, interactive exhibits at the Visitors Center, and free family activity sheets. Options include crossword puzzles, a state seal coloring page, a “design a statue” activity, and a Capitol Grounds scavenger hunt.

These turn a formal government building into a search-and-discover outing. Younger children may enjoy the large rotunda and open lawns, but a full spoken tour can be hard for toddlers.

Most of the core visit is indoors, so the Capitol works well during rain or extreme heat. The grounds and scavenger hunt add outdoor time when the weather is comfortable. Historic surfaces can be uneven, and some stairs are narrow.

The official accessibility page identifies marked accessible routes and says wheelchairs can be checked out for tours. A visitor guide also identifies a Baby Care Room and family restrooms in the Capitol Extension, making this one of the easier historic sites for families with younger siblings.

Admission and guided tours are free. The main arrival cost is parking. The official visitor garage at 1201 San Jacinto Boulevard is free for the first two hours on weekdays, then costs $1 per half hour up to $12.

Weekend parking is sometimes free, but prepaid special-event rates can reach $25. Tours leave from the South Foyer, so allow time to enter and find the guide office. The Capitol Grill serves weekday breakfast and lunch in the Extension.
