National Children's Museum

National Children's Museum combines the active play of a children's museum with science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Its exhibits are designed for children from birth through age 12, although the strongest fit is often ages 2 to 10. Little Dreamers and Little Movers give infants and toddlers protected places to crawl, move, and explore.

Older children can tackle the three-story Dream Machine climber and slide, investigate data, try engineering ideas through sports and games, create with art and technology, and make lightning or rain in a green-screen weather experience.

The museum is indoors, which makes it a strong choice for rain, cold, or very hot weather. Plan two to three hours for a family visit. Official group programs are generally scheduled for 1.

5 to 2 hours, but independent families can move at their own speed. The museum is highly stimulating, with movement, sound, and many children sharing exhibits. Designated quiet spaces, sensory backpacks, noise-reduction headphones, and fidgets are available for visitors who need a calmer reset.

Admission is $18. 95 for adults and children age 1 or older. Babies under 1 and members enter free.

Two adults with two children age 1 or older would pay $75. 80. Qualifying families can use Museums for All, which offers up to four $3 tickets through the walk-up line with proof of eligibility.

The museum uses timed admission, and advance reservations are wise for busy dates. Every party normally needs at least one adult and one child age 0 through 12.

Arrival takes planning because the museum is inside the federal Ronald Reagan Building complex. The entrance is on Woodrow Wilson Plaza near 13th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, and every guest passes through security screening. Federal Triangle Metro is nearby, while street parking is limited and garage parking costs extra.

Strollers are allowed throughout the museum or can be left in the free, unattended stroller area. For the Dream Machine, children remove their shoes and should wear socks. The official pages ask and answer many infant questions, but currently exposed information does not clearly verify a nursing room, changing facilities, or on-site meal service.
