Carousel Theatre for Young People

Carousel Theatre for Young People is Vancouver's premier professional theater company for kids and families. Based on Granville Island, they produce a full season of shows specifically created for young audiences, from preschoolers through early teens.

The productions are genuinely good — professional actors, original scripts, sharp set designs. This isn't community theater with wobbly sets. Carousel has been running since 1975 and the quality shows. Past seasons have included adaptations of beloved children's books alongside original works that tackle themes like friendship, identity, and adventure.

The venue on Cartwright Street is intimate, seating around 200. That's a big plus for families — your kid will actually be able to see and hear everything, and the performers interact with the audience more than you'd get at a larger theater. Shows typically run 60-90 minutes, with many designed for shorter attention spans.

Beyond performances, Carousel runs drama classes and camps for kids ages 3-19. These fill up fast, especially summer camps, so register early if interested.

Granville Island itself is a full family outing. Combine a show with the Kids Market across the street, a walk through the public market, or a ride on the Aquabus mini ferry. Parking on the island is tight on weekends — take the bus or Aquabus instead.

The theater is accessible with wheelchair seating available. Concessions are minimal, but the Granville Island Public Market has every food option a family could want.
