About

The Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest art museums in North America, but what makes it exceptional for families is how deliberately it has been designed to welcome children. With over 120,000 works spanning centuries and continents, the AGO could be overwhelming — instead, it offers thoughtful entry points for visitors of all ages.

The crown jewel for families is the Dr. Mariano Elia Hands-On Centre, a dedicated creative space where children 14 and under can explore art-making through painting, sculpting, drawing, and mixed-media projects inspired by the gallery's current exhibitions. Staffed by trained educators, the centre provides a genuine creative experience — not just colouring pages.

Activities rotate regularly, so repeat visits feel fresh.

The building itself is an attraction. The Frank Gehry-designed renovation added the stunning Galleria Italia, a 137-metre-long corridor of glass and Douglas fir beams that curves along the north face of the building. Kids are captivated by the architecture — it feels like walking inside a giant wooden ship.

The Henry Moore Sculpture Centre houses the world's largest public collection of Moore's work, and the bronzes are intentionally touchable, making it one of the few gallery spaces where kids are encouraged to interact physically with the art.

The AGO's collection includes European masterworks, Canadian art from the Group of Seven through to contemporary Indigenous artists, and rotating special exhibitions that often feature interactive or immersive elements. Family Sundays offer guided activities, and the gallery provides self-guided family activity sheets that turn a visit into a treasure hunt through the collections.

The admission policy is remarkably family-friendly. Ontario residents under 25 enter free with valid ID, which means your teenagers can visit independently as they get older. The first Wednesday evening of each month is free for everyone, making it an excellent date-night-with-kids option.

Located at Dundas and McCaul in the heart of downtown, the AGO sits on the doorstep of both Chinatown and Kensington Market, creating natural before or after-visit dining options. The on-site AGO Bistro offers a kids menu, and the FRANK Restaurant provides a more refined option for families celebrating a special occasion. Strollers are welcome, and the gallery is fully accessible.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

First Wednesday of each month from 6-9PM is free admission (book online in advance). Weekday mornings are quietest. The Hands-On Centre for kids can get busy on weekends — arrive early.

Nearby Food

AGO Bistro inside the gallery has a kids menu with reasonable prices. FRANK Restaurant on the ground floor is a more upscale option. Chinatown is literally across the street — Rol San (323 Spadina Ave) for dim sum is excellent with kids. King's Noodle (296 Spadina Ave) is a family favourite for casual Chinese. Kensington Market is a 5-minute walk for diverse food options.

Why Kids Love It

The AGO is not the stuffy art museum you might expect. The Dr. Mariano Elia Hands-On Centre is the secret weapon — a dedicated space where kids can get messy with paint, clay, and mixed media, try art-making activities inspired by the current exhibitions, and explore play-based learning stations.

It is specifically designed for kids 14 and under, and the staff running it genuinely care about making art accessible and fun. Beyond the Hands-On Centre, the gallery itself has kid-friendly highlights: the Frank Gehry-designed Galleria Italia with its soaring wooden beams that look like the inside of a ship, the Henry Moore sculpture collection that kids love walking around and touching (the bronzes are hands-on), and rotating exhibitions that often include interactive elements. The AGO also runs family Sundays with guided activities, scavenger hunts, and drop-in workshops that give kids a reason to look closely at the art instead of just walking past it.

Even teenagers respond to the contemporary art galleries, where the work often challenges expectations of what art can be.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Head to the Hands-On Centre first — it has limited capacity and gets busy on weekends
  • Grab a family activity guide at the front desk for a self-guided art scavenger hunt through the galleries
  • The Galleria Italia (the glass and wood walkway) is stunning for photos and kids love the architecture
  • Wednesday and Friday evenings until 9PM are less crowded and have a different energy than daytime visits
  • The AGO Bistro has a kids menu — it is a good spot for a mid-visit snack or lunch break

What to Bring

  • Smocks or clothes you don't mind getting paint on if heading to the Hands-On Centre
  • A sketchbook and pencils if your kids like to draw — many galleries allow sketching
  • Comfortable shoes — the AGO is large and you will do a lot of walking
  • A carrier for babies instead of a stroller if visiting on a weekend — galleries can get tight
  • Snacks for between galleries — the cafe can have a wait on busy days
