About

Ueno Zoo is Japan's oldest zoo, established in 1882, and remains one of Tokyo's most beloved family destinations. Spread across two sections connected by a monorail bridge, the zoo is home to over 3,000 animals representing more than 400 species. The star attraction is undoubtedly the giant panda — Ueno Zoo has been home to pandas for decades and consistently draws families eager to see these beloved bears.

Beyond pandas, children can see gorillas, Sumatran tigers, polar bears, African elephants, and a vibrant bird park with free-flying species. The western section hosts the Children's Zoo, a hands-on petting area where kids can meet and touch rabbits, goats, and guinea pigs. A small pony riding area delights younger visitors.

The zoo is set within Ueno Park, one of Tokyo's greatest public spaces — meaning families can easily combine the zoo with the park's paddle boats, museums, and seasonal attractions. In spring, the cherry trees surrounding the zoo are legendary and draw enormous crowds. Admission is among the lowest of any major Tokyo attraction, and children under elementary school age enter free, making it exceptionally family-friendly for budget-conscious visitors.

Plan to arrive early on weekends to secure panda viewing slots.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Arrive right when the zoo opens to beat the panda viewing line — it can stretch over an hour on weekends.
  • Pick up a zoo map at the entrance and plan your route around feeding times, posted on boards near each exhibit.
  • Combine with Ueno Park's paddle boats on Shinobazu Pond for a full half-day family adventure.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes — the zoo covers a lot of ground
  • Packed snacks and water bottles to avoid overpriced stalls
