Miraikan, The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation

Miraikan is a highly interactive science museum that works for a wide span of ages. Its permanent exhibitions explore Earth, new technology, and choices about the future. Children can look, touch, experiment, and discuss rather than simply read display labels. The giant Geo-Cosmos globe gives the museum an immediate sense of scale, while English appears on almost all exhibit explanations.

Families with younger children should make Curiosity Field a priority. This parent-and-child area is recommended for ages three and older. Children roll balls made in different shapes and materials, build a wall-mounted track from pipes and hoses, and turn their drawings into moving parts of a digital town.

Sessions normally run for 45 minutes. They cannot be booked in advance, and numbered tickets may be issued on weekends, holidays, or other crowded days. A guardian must participate with the children.

The museum recommends about two hours for a standard visit, with extra time needed for Curiosity Field or the Dome Theater. Permanent-exhibition admission is JPY 630 for adults, JPY 210 for visitors 18 and under, and free for preschool children. The Dome Theater requires a separate combination or add-on ticket, and all seats are reserved.

Miraikan is especially easy for families managing a stroller or baby. The official accessibility page confirms 13 rental strollers, elevators, a fifth-floor nursing room, a changing table, formula water, and changing facilities in multipurpose toilets. A sensory-friendly kit and quiet rooms are also available. Cafeteria Blue serves food, while brought food may be eaten only in designated areas.

Arrival is straightforward by transit: the museum is a five-minute walk from Tokyo International Cruise Terminal Station and four minutes from Telecom Center Station. The most important planning detail is the upcoming refurbishment. The entire museum will close from October 1, 2026 through April 22, 2027.

Check the official calendar before traveling, even outside that period, because Tuesdays and year-end dates are normally closed.
