Florida Botanical Gardens

Florida Botanical Gardens is a free outdoor destination in Largo, west of Tampa. Pinellas County lists 150 acres of formal gardens, landscaped areas and native habitats, giving families room to choose anything from a short children's-garden visit to a longer walk. The Majeed Discovery Garden is the clearest reason to bring younger children.

It adds interactive, hands-on nature play to a place that might otherwise feel more suited to adults who want a quiet garden stroll.

Regular admission and parking are free, so the garden works well for families who want a flexible outing without a ticket commitment. Most families should allow one and a half to three hours. Toddlers and younger elementary-age children will likely spend the most time in the children's garden, while older children can look for butterflies, birds, unusual plants and changing blooms along the larger paths. The Foundation also schedules preschool, homeschool and other nature programs for specific age groups.

This is an outdoor Florida visit. Morning is the safer choice when temperatures are lower and afternoon storms are less likely. Bring water, sun protection and insect repellent.
