Arcadia Park

4.4(457)

Ages: The sweet spot is about 2 through 10. This is a classic City of Phoenix neighborhood park rather than a destination playground, and the play equipment listed for it, swings, monkey bars, slides and a small climbing wall, covers the preschool through elementary range well. Infants come along fine because the paved path through the park is easy with a stroller and the ramadas give you somewhere shaded to sit and feed. Toddlers get the swings and the lower structures. Big kids and tweens climb everything, then move on to the multipurpose field, the sand volleyball court and the loop path, which local guides note gets used for skateboards, scooters and bikes. Teens are the honest gap: unless they are there for volleyball or a pickup game on the field, there is not much to hold them for more than an hour.

Daisy Mountain Railroad

4.7(293)

Ages: Roughly 1 through 8, with the sweet spot from about 2 to 6. This is a 24 inch gauge miniature railroad that loops through Anthem Community Park on a 2,800 foot track, and the ride runs about ten minutes at a gentle pace, so the appeal is the novelty of a real little train rather than any thrill. Babies can ride on a lap, and the railroad's own pricing page says children under 1 ride free with a paying adult. Toddlers and preschoolers are the target audience, and little kids who are into trains stay delighted through several laps. Big kids will do a lap happily and then want the three story Adventure Playground and the splash pad next door, which is fine because those are free. Tweens and teens will be bored by the train itself, though the park's skate park and fishing lakes can carry them for an hour or two while younger siblings ride.

Ages: Roughly 2 to 11 for the daytime Pumpkin Days experience, with the widest appeal between 4 and 9. Admission has historically covered the mini maze, the petting zoo, the play areas and the jumping pillow, and that bundle is built for kids who want to run. Toddlers get the corn box, the animals and the mini maze. Little kids and big kids get the 6-acre family maze, the hay pyramid and the pedal cart track. Tweens hold interest through the big maze and the tomato cannon. Teens are the honest gap here: the attraction aimed at them is AZ Field of Screams, a separate after-dark haunted attraction on the same property, which is not part of the family daytime visit and is not appropriate for young kids. Infants can come in a carrier but the dust and the heat make it a lot of work for no return.
