Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West

Western Spirit gives families a wide view of the North American West through art, objects, film and stories. The two-story museum covers 55,000 square feet and looks beyond Arizona to the western United States, Western Canada and Mexico. One ongoing gallery holds about 1,400 Old West items, including saddles, spurs, badges, clothing and tools.

The West in Miniature asks visitors to slow down and study tiny paintings, carvings, ceramics and sculptures, sometimes with a magnifying glass. Current exhibitions change, so the exact mix may also include Western movie costumes, posters and clips.

This is a gallery museum, not a play center. It works best for children roughly 8 to 14 who like cowboys, horses, movies, art or regional history. Younger children may do better with a scavenger hunt.

The museum’s current summer program offers three hunts for all ages, including a hidden-treasures search for small Zuni carvings, and children receive a prize when they finish. Daily docent tours last about 45 minutes and are included with admission, but they depend on docent availability. School programming is designed mainly for grades 3 through 6, another useful clue about the strongest age fit.

Most families should allow 1.5 to 3 hours, the range published by the museum. Galleries provide a reliable indoor break from Scottsdale heat or rain, and the sculpture courtyard adds some outdoor space. The building and galleries are designed for accessibility, but the official family materials do not publish a stroller policy or nursing-room details. Call ahead if either is important.

Adults pay $28, youth and students pay $12, and children 5 and younger are free. A family with two adults and two ticketed youths would pay $80. Free underground parking is available next to the museum, which removes a common Old Town arrival problem.

The museum has no restaurant or café, so eat before or after the visit; school groups may use the outdoor South Plaza by arrangement. Hours change by season, with summer Monday closures and longer Thursday hours from November through April. Check the official hours and exhibition pages before going.
