Willowbrook County Park in Honor of Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller

Willowbrook County Park in Aptos is one of the best family parks in the Santa Cruz area. It's free, it's beautiful, and it has both a quality playground and hiking trails through a redwood forest.

The playground is shaded by towering redwoods, which keeps it noticeably cooler than most playgrounds on warm days. The equipment is large and well-maintained with features for different age groups. Toddlers have appropriate structures, and older kids have climbing challenges and bigger slides.

The hiking trails are the other major draw. They wind through a redwood and mixed forest, and they're gentle enough for young kids to walk on their own. A creek runs through the park that kids love to explore and splash in during warmer months. The trails are well-marked but unpaved in most sections — bring appropriate shoes.

The park is named in honor of Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller, and there's a memorial near the entrance. It's a respectful tribute that adds meaning to the visit.

Strollers work on some of the wider paths near the playground but not on the hiking trails. For the trails with a baby, a carrier is the way to go.

There's no food or facilities beyond restrooms. Aptos Village is about 5 minutes away with cafes and restaurants. Bring water and snacks for a longer visit.

Park hours are sunrise to sunset. No admission or parking fees. Weekday mornings are the most peaceful time to visit.
