Museo de Arte Costarricense offers families a calm, free introduction to Costa Rican visual art inside one of San José's most interesting heritage buildings. The museum stands in Parque Metropolitano La Sabana in the former La Sabana international airport, a neocolonial building completed around 1940. That setting gives children two things to explore at once: the artwork and a building that once welcomed air travelers.

The museum holds more than 6,000 works, including painting, sculpture, photography, and other media from the mid-19th century into the 21st century. Only part of that collection will be displayed at one time, so families should expect permanent collection material alongside changing exhibitions. The first floor includes exhibition spaces, an educational room, and the sculpture garden.

The second floor contains the Salón Dorado and a display from the Juan Manuel Sánchez collection.

This is a better fit for children who can slow down and look than for toddlers who need to run or touch everything. A simple family game can make the visit active: choose a color to find, compare two faces, count animals or repeated shapes, or sketch one favorite object. The museum's family advice encourages adults to ask open questions and accept children's different answers.

It also suggests comfortable clothing, snacks, a camera, and paper and pencil.

There are a few arrival details to know. Admission is free, but visitors complete a short registration by scanning a QR code. Lockers and rest areas are available.

The official access page says the first floor, exhibitions, educational room, and sculpture garden can be reached using ramps and level changes. A wheelchair may be requested. The heritage building has no elevator to the second floor, so the Salón Dorado is not step-free.

An official stroller policy, nursing space, changing station, and on-site food service were not confirmed.
