San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park

San Francisco Maritime is a split experience right now. Families can still visit the San Francisco waterfront, Visitor Center and Maritime Museum, but Hyde Street Pier is closed for rebuilding. The historic ships have been moved to Mare Island in Vallejo.

One current NPS page lists possible weekend access from noon to 4:00 PM when staff are available, while another says visitors cannot currently board. Treat any ship visit as unconfirmed until the park verifies it that day.

Start at the Visitor Center at 499 Jefferson Street. Inside the historic Haslett Warehouse, children can walk through exhibits about Bay Area voyages, immigration and waterfront life. The main exhibit recreates six old San Francisco neighborhoods with sound and large objects.

Families can also see a first-order Fresnel lighthouse lens, watch the park film and ask about the Junior Ranger program. This is the strongest stop for elementary-age children because it gives them specific things to find and stories to follow.

From Wednesday through Sunday, add the Maritime Museum at 900 Beach Street. It has maritime exhibits, large murals and views over Aquatic Park Cove. The outdoor park includes paved paths, grass, a beach and room for a short waterfront walk. The beach requires steps, and the water is cold with strong currents, so this listing is better treated as a history outing than a swimming plan.

Plan about 90 minutes if you only visit the Visitor Center and nearby waterfront. Allow two to three hours if the Maritime Museum is open and your children like Junior Ranger activities. Both indoor stops make the park workable during light rain, though the walk between buildings is exposed.
