Oakland Zoo

Rating

4.6(14,251)

Family of 4

Admission varies by date.

Duration

4-6 hours for the main zoo, Children's Zoo and California Trail; about 2-3 hours for a shorter lower-zoo visit.

Best Ages

Best for ages 2 to 12, with enough large-animal habitats and conservation material for teens and adults.

About

Oakland Zoo is a full-day outing with large animal areas, a dedicated Children's Zoo, hilltop habitats and several optional rides. In the lower zoo, families can see lions, giraffes, zebras, rainforest animals and smaller species. The included gondola makes a four-minute trip over Knowland Park to California Trail, where native animals include bison, bears, wolves, a jaguar and California condors.

The zoo's wide layout means younger children can have a good visit without covering every section.

The Wayne and Gladys Valley Children's Zoo is the strongest starting point for ages 2 to 8. Children can follow animal footprints, watch river otters, search the reptile and amphibian room, crawl through a tortoise shell and gently pet goats or sheep. California Trail adds a large outdoor playground with five nature-based play zones.

Paid rides include the Express Train through Wild Australia, a carousel, a small roller coaster and other height-limited attractions. The open Sky Ride requires every rider to be at least 3 years old.

Plan four to six hours for the main areas and a meal. A shorter visit can focus on the Children's Zoo, nearby habitats and one ride. Most of the zoo is outdoors, and official guidance warns that bad weather may close the zoo or gondola.

Paths are wheelchair accessible but can be steep. Families may bring a stroller or rent a double stroller for $11 at the main gift shop while supplies last. No official nursing-room or baby-changing statement was found.

Admission uses date-based Plan-Ahead Pricing, so the zoo does not publish one fixed adult dollar amount. Children under 2 enter free, and child tickets are 15% below the day's adult rate. General-admission reservations are required.

Buy parking online for $13; it costs $16 at entry. Food is available at grills, cafés and snack carts, and families may use picnic tables for their own food. Book early and check the closure list.

The zoo posts special maintenance days, early closings and attraction shutdowns that can change the value of a visit.

  • Check the closure list for maintenance, private events and weather-related gondola changes.

What to Bring
