San Diego Zoo Safari Park

San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a full-day wildlife outing in Escondido's San Pasqual Valley, not a second gate beside the San Diego Zoo. The two parks are 35 miles apart, and the official site advises allowing 45 minutes to one hour of travel time. Once inside, families walk between large habitats, gardens and activity areas.

The standard one-day ticket includes the approximately 25-minute Africa Tram, which travels around savanna habitats and gives everyone a seated break from the hills.

Children also have several places to move. Village Playground is an interactive African-village play area. Mawazo Woods has shaded picnic seating beside climbing structures, Camp Play Area adds slides near Tiger Trail and the seasonal Savanna Cool Zone uses mist and water-spouting animal figures.

These areas make the park especially good for ages 3 to 12, although teens who care about wildlife can spend a full day here.

Plan five to seven hours and expect substantial walking. The park warns about steep grades, and the Africa Tram boarding area is about two-thirds of a mile downhill from the entrance. Strollers are welcome and rentals are available near the gate, but the terrain keeps the venue in the limited rather than easy stroller category.

An accessibility shuttle serves guests with mobility-related disabilities. Official maps identify nursing and family restroom facilities.

This is primarily an outdoor attraction. Heat, sun and rain affect the day much more than at an aquarium or indoor museum. Arrive at opening, carry closed-lid water and build shaded meal or play breaks into the route. Africa Tram is first come, first served and is busiest from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on peak days.

Current one-day prices are $78 for adults ages 12 and older and $68 for children ages 3 to 11. Two adults and two children total $312. Add $20 general parking for a $332 starting cost before food or premium safaris. Parking has no in-and-out privileges. Online Value Days currently reduce each ticket by $5 on selected dates.

The park has enough dining to avoid crossing the grounds for every meal. Thorntree Terrace, Mombasa Cooker and Mawazo Kitchen list children's meals, while other stands sell pizza, sandwiches, pasta and snacks.
