About

Jardin du Luxembourg is the great family park of the Left Bank and one of the best free places in Paris to spend a morning with children. At its heart is the octagonal Grand Bassin, where kids rent flat-bottomed wooden sailboats and push them around with long poles — a ritual that has been going on here since the late 1800s. Nearby, a classic Guignol puppet theater puts on shows that have made French children laugh for generations, with shouting-encouraged audience participation that works even for kids who don't speak French.

A large playground occupies the southeast corner of the park, with climbing frames, swings, and a small trampoline area. Pony rides operate in a dedicated enclosure beside the playground, and a vintage carousel spins just outside the gates on the Rue Guynemer side. The central fountain, formal parterres, and long avenue of plane trees give the park a grandeur that makes even a simple picnic feel special.

Iron chairs scattered throughout invite adults to relax while children roam within sight. The park is at its best on warm weekday mornings when Parisian families and au pairs take over the playground. Weekend afternoons in summer are significantly more crowded.

Located in the 6th arrondissement between Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Montparnasse, it pairs naturally with a Latin Quarter lunch or a stop at one of the surrounding patisseries.
