Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum introduces families to the maritime history of North Carolina's Outer Banks and the thousands of shipwrecks resting off the coast. The renovated state museum is in Hatteras near the southern end of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Its galleries are self-guided, so families can move quickly through text-heavy sections or slow down for objects, stories, and audio-visual displays that catch a child's attention.

The museum makes the history more approachable for children with a free scavenger hunt available at the front desk. Children search through the galleries and receive a prize after completing it. The education center offers coloring pages, books, a giant Lite-Brite, and other independent activities.

These features make the strongest age fit roughly 6 to 13, although teens interested in storms, ships, local history, or archaeology can also enjoy the visit.

Plan to stay for at least one hour, which is the museum's own recommendation. Add time for the education center, gift shop, or a scheduled program. The event calendar includes maritime crafts, make-and-take projects, history talks, music, and archaeology activities. Some crafts are designed for elementary-age children and older, so read each event description before promising an activity.

Admission and parking are free. The correct museum lot is just past the building and can handle cars, RVs, and trailers. Do not use the smaller lot across from the museum, which is reserved for beach access. A paved sidewalk and automatic doors lead to the entrance. Two wheelchairs are available first-come, first-served, and most audio-visual displays have closed captions.

This is a useful indoor stop during ordinary rain, but families should check the official site before driving in rough coastal weather because unexpected closures are posted there. Food and drinks cannot enter the gallery. The gift shop sells snacks, but full meal options nearby were not verified. The museum is closed Sundays, Mondays, and state holidays.
