Bodie Island Lighthouse

Bodie Island Lighthouse offers two different family experiences. The outdoor light station and marsh boardwalk are an easy, free stop for all ages. The seasonal lighthouse climb is a much more physical adventure with strict height and safety rules. Families can enjoy the grounds even if a child is too small to climb or someone in the group prefers to stay at ground level.

The tower has just over 200 steps, about the effort of climbing a ten-story building. Its narrow metal stairs have nine landings and a handrail on only one side. There is no elevator or air conditioning, and the inside may feel hot, humid, dim, or noisy.

Every climber must be at least 42 inches tall, weigh under 260 pounds, and climb independently. A child age 11 or younger needs an accompanying person age 16 or older. Adults cannot carry a child, including in a child carrier.

Climb tickets are sold only through Recreation.gov. They become available at 7:00 AM for that same day and are first come, first served. Published 2026 climb times run every 20 minutes from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM during the main seasonal window.

Arrive at least five minutes early because late visitors may lose their place without a refund. The climb costs $10 per adult and $5 for a child age 11 or younger. Entry to Cape Hatteras National Seashore and visiting the grounds are free.

Weather is the biggest planning risk. Rangers can cancel climbs for thunder, dangerous heat, tornado warnings, or strong wind. Morning tickets may reduce the chance of intense heat, but families should check NPS alerts before driving over.

A stroller or wheelchair can use the fully accessible Bodie Island Lighthouse Boardwalk, a 0.4-mile out-and-back route through the marsh. The tower itself is not accessible. Flush restrooms and accessible parking are available.

The historic Double Keepers' Quarters visitor center and store remain closed indefinitely following a 2025 fire, so do not plan on an indoor exhibit or store stop. Allow 45 to 90 minutes for the lighthouse area, or up to two hours if you include the boardwalk and time for wildlife watching.
