About

The National Museum of Mathematics, usually called MoMath, is a highly interactive indoor museum where children learn by moving, building, racing, drawing, and testing ideas. Its permanent Chelsea location opened in 2026 at 635 Sixth Avenue. The two-story museum covers about 46,000 square feet and has more than 70 exhibits, including new displays and returning favorites.

There is also a dedicated space for early learners.

This is a strong choice for school-age children who like puzzles or physical challenges, but children do not need to think they are good at math. Current exhibits invite visitors to ride a trike with square wheels, adjust a track to find the fastest route, paint digital patterns with symmetry, explore motion using their whole body, and build unusual three-dimensional forms. Younger children can focus on color, shapes, movement, and cause and effect.

Tweens and teens can spend more time working out why each surprising result happens.

Plan about two hours for a normal family visit. Three hours may work better for children who want to repeat activities or solve every challenge. The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM seven days a week and closes on Thanksgiving.

It also posts occasional early closures, including some program days, so check the official Visit page on the morning of your trip. Children under 16 must remain with an adult.

Advance general admission currently costs $30 per adult and $20 for ages 2 through 17, making a standard family-of-four total $100. Children under 2 are free. MoMath typically schedules two Free Play days each month, and eligible ASTC Passport members may qualify under distance rules.

The museum is near several subway and bus lines, while driving adds friction because there is no museum garage and Chelsea street parking is scarce. Capacity can also create an entry wait, even for members. The official pages do not clearly confirm stroller, nursing, changing, or food arrangements at the new building. Families needing those services should call before visiting.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Arrive near 10:00 AM on a non-holiday weekday for more time at popular interactive exhibits.

Wait Times

No standard wait is published. The museum warns that all visitors, including members, may need to wait if legal capacity is reached.

Nearby Food

The official visitor pages do not provide verified family dining guidance or a current museum food policy. Plan a meal before or after the visit and confirm whether outside food may enter.

Why Kids Love It

Children move, build, race, draw, experiment, and solve challenges instead of only reading labels. Highlights include riding on square wheels, adjusting tracks, making digital symmetry art, and exploring motion.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Purchase admission online before arrival because the official Visit page lists advance pricing and the museum can reach capacity.
  • Start with the most physical exhibits before children tire, then shift to puzzles, building stations, and the early-learning area.
  • Check the Visit page on the morning of your trip because the museum occasionally closes early for programs and special events.
  • Use the subway or bus when possible. The museum has no parking garage, and nearby street parking is extremely limited.

What to Bring

  • A phone with the ticket confirmation
  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes
  • A small bag for hands-free exhibit use
  • A water plan and any necessary snacks, subject to the museum's current food policy
