About

Imagination Playground sits in the South Street Seaport neighborhood of Lower Manhattan and is unlike any other playground in New York City. Instead of fixed slides and climbing structures, it centers around large, lightweight blue foam blocks that kids drag, stack, combine, and rearrange to create whatever they imagine. The name is earned.

The concept was developed by architect David Rockwell and debuted here in Burling Slip Park. The idea is straightforward but radical for a public playground: give children open-ended materials and let them construct their own play. Watching a group of 5-year-olds collaborate to build a fort, or a 9-year-old engineer a ramp system, is a genuinely impressive thing.

Kids don't need prompting — they take to the blocks immediately.

The playground also features a water play area and sand that becomes a major draw on hot summer days. Bring a complete change of clothes if you visit in warm weather — kids will get wet. Thoroughly. The combination of sand, water, and foam blocks means visits routinely run two hours or more.

Logistically, the location in the Financial District makes weekday mornings surprisingly peaceful — the neighborhood's working crowd doesn't bring many kids on weekday mornings. Weekends get busier as it draws families from across the city who pair it with a walk along the Seaport or a ride on the Fulton Street Ferry.

Entry is free. There are no reservations, no tickets. The playground is open 9AM-5PM daily, but check the NYC Parks website for any seasonal closures. Food options in the Seaport area skew toward tourist pricing, so packing snacks is wise. Stroller-accessible paths make it easy to navigate with younger kids in tow.

Why Kids Love It

Imagination Playground in the South Street Seaport area is no ordinary playground — it's built around large, lightweight blue foam blocks that kids can move, stack, and build with however they choose. There's no prescribed way to play here, which is exactly why kids stay engaged for hours. A popular water play area is a major hit in summer, letting kids splash and dig in sand without any structured equipment to compete for.
