Congo Gorilla Forest

Congo Gorilla Forest is widely considered one of the finest wildlife exhibits in the United States, and that reputation holds up on a first visit. The 6. 5-acre indoor/outdoor immersive environment at Bronx Zoo houses western lowland gorillas — one of the most endangered great ape species — in a constructed Central African rainforest complete with dense vegetation, mist, tropical bird calls, and carefully designed pathways that take visitors through the habitat rather than past it.

The experience is different from a standard zoo exhibit in a specific way: you're inside the environment with the gorillas (separated by glass), not standing outside looking at an enclosure from a distance. The paths wind through realistic rainforest vegetation, and the gorilla groups move through their habitat the way gorillas actually move — deliberately, purposefully, with clear social dynamics among family members that older children can observe and interpret.

The first time a silverback male looks directly at a child through the glass, about three feet away, something happens in that child's understanding of what 'wild animal' means. It's the single moment most families cite as the Bronx Zoo highlight of the entire day.

Beyond gorillas, Congo Gorilla Forest also houses western lowland colobus monkeys, de Brazza's monkeys, okapis (which look like a giraffe-zebra mashup and absolutely stop kids in their tracks), and multiple African bird species.
