About

The Montreal Insectarium, part of the Espace pour la vie complex, underwent a complete transformation and reopened as one of the most innovative insect museums in the world. Rather than rows of pinned specimens behind glass, the new Insectarium immerses visitors in the world of insects through tunnels, chambers, and environments designed to make you feel insect-sized.

The highlight for families is the butterfly greenhouse — a warm, humid conservatory where hundreds of butterflies from tropical regions fly freely around you. Kids stand perfectly still (a rare feat) waiting for a monarch or blue morpho to land on them. It's a genuinely magical experience and produces some of the best family photos you'll ever take.

The main exhibition spaces take you through the diversity of the insect world with live specimens in carefully designed terrariums. Giant stick insects, rhinoceros beetles, leaf-cutter ant colonies, and yes, tarantulas are all on display. The exhibits are designed at kid height with interactive elements throughout.

For adventurous families, seasonal insect tasting events let you sample cricket-based snacks and other edible insects — older kids and teens get a huge kick out of this.

The Insectarium is relatively compact, making it perfect for families with younger children who might not last through a larger museum. Budget 1.5-2 hours for a thorough visit. It's adjacent to the Botanical Garden and a short walk from the Biodôme and Planetarium, making it easy to combine into a full-day Espace pour la vie experience with combo tickets.

Access is via the Pie-IX metro station (Green Line) or shared parking at the Olympic Park complex ($14.25/day). The building is fully accessible with elevator access and stroller-friendly throughout.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Weekday mornings for the smallest crowds. The butterfly greenhouse is most active on warm, sunny days. Summer brings the outdoor insect garden which adds an extra dimension to the visit.

Nearby Food

The Espace pour la vie complex has a café. Jean-Talon Market is a 10-minute drive for fresh food. The Botanical Garden next door has picnic-friendly green spaces if you pack lunch. For restaurants, try Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighborhood along Ontario Street.

Why Kids Love It

The redesigned Insectarium is unlike any bug museum your kids have been to. After a major renovation, it reopened with an immersive approach that literally shrinks you to insect scale. Kids walk through tunnels and chambers designed to make them feel like they're inside a hive or underground burrow.

The butterfly greenhouse is the undeniable star — you walk into a warm, humid room filled with hundreds of free-flying butterflies from around the world, and they land on your kids. On your arms, your hair, your nose. Kids freeze with delight.

Beyond the butterflies, there are terrariums with giant stick insects, rhinoceros beetles, and tarantulas that make even squeamish kids press their faces to the glass. The tasting section (yes, insect tasting) is a hit with adventurous older kids and teens. The whole museum is designed to change how kids think about insects — from creepy-crawlies to fascinating creatures.

Most kids leave wanting to find bugs in their backyard, which is exactly the point.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • The butterfly greenhouse has limited capacity — go first thing to avoid the line that builds after 11 AM
  • Wear bright colors in the butterfly room; butterflies are more likely to land on you
  • The insect tasting station is seasonal and worth trying — the cricket snacks are surprisingly good
  • Combine with the Botanical Garden next door for a half-day; the combo ticket is the best deal
  • The museum is compact enough for toddlers to handle without melting down

What to Bring
