About

The Montreal Biodôme is one of the most unique family attractions in Canada. Built inside the former Olympic cycling velodrome from the 1976 Games, it recreates four distinct ecosystems under one massive roof. You walk through a steamy tropical rainforest with free-roaming monkeys and parrots, a Laurentian maple forest with beavers and otters, the Gulf of St.

Lawrence marine environment with underwater viewing galleries, and a Sub-Antarctic island habitat with colonies of penguins.

What makes the Biodôme special compared to a standard zoo is the immersion. You are inside the habitats, not looking at them through fences. The temperature, humidity, and lighting change as you move from one ecosystem to the next, and kids notice it immediately.

The tropical zone is genuinely hot and humid. The polar zone is cold enough that you can see your breath. It makes the experience feel real in a way that traditional exhibits don't.

The Biodôme is part of the Espace pour la vie complex, which also includes the Botanical Garden, Insectarium, and Planetarium — all within walking distance. A combo ticket covering two or more of these museums is the best value, and you could easily fill a full day exploring the complex. The Biodôme itself takes about 2 hours to walk through thoroughly, which is a perfect duration for families with young kids.

Practical logistics: Timed-entry tickets are required and should be booked online in advance. The closest metro station is Viau (Green Line), which puts you a short walk from the entrance. Parking is available for $14.

25 per day and the ticket covers all three Espace pour la vie lots. Strollers are allowed throughout, and the pathways are wide and accessible. There are changing stations in the restrooms.

The on-site café is basic — plan to eat elsewhere if you want a real meal.

Why Kids Love It

The Biodôme is basically four ecosystems crammed under one roof inside the old Olympic velodrome, and kids lose their minds walking through each one. You start in a tropical rainforest — it's hot, humid, and there are actual monkeys swinging overhead, bright parrots calling from the canopy, and caimans lounging in murky water. Then you step into the Laurentian Maple Forest, which feels like a Quebec autumn hike complete with beavers, otters, and lynx.

The Gulf of St. Lawrence section has a massive underwater viewing window where kids press their faces against the glass to watch rays and fish glide past. But the real showstopper is the Sub-Antarctic Islands zone — penguins.

Dozens of them waddling on rocks, diving into the water, and generally being the most entertaining animals on the planet. Toddlers squeal, big kids narrate the penguin drama, and teens actually put their phones down to watch. The whole experience feels immersive rather than zoo-like because you walk through the habitats, not past cages.

The temperature changes between zones are part of the fun — kids love the blast of cold air when you enter the polar section.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Book timed-entry tickets online at least a week ahead — walkup availability is limited and weekend slots sell out
  • Start with the Tropical Forest while it's still cool in the morning; the humidity gets uncomfortable in the afternoon
  • The penguin feeding happens around 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM — time your visit to catch it
  • Combine with the Insectarium or Planetarium next door using a combo ticket for a full day
  • The gift shop is right at the exit — set expectations with kids before you enter

What to Bring

  • Water bottles (it gets warm in the tropical zone)
  • Light layers (temperature swings between zones)
  • Camera with no flash
  • Snacks for after
  • Comfortable walking shoes
