About
The Chinese Garden at the Montreal Botanical Garden is the largest Chinese garden outside of China, and it's one of the most popular sections for families. The traditional Ming Dynasty-style architecture, winding paths, and central lake full of lotus plants and koi fish create an environment that feels transported from another continent.
For kids, the star attraction is the koi pond. Brightly colored fish cruise through the water in large schools, and children will stand at the railing watching them for surprising stretches of time. The lotus flowers blooming on the lake surface in summer add to the visual spectacle.
The architecture keeps older kids interested. Seven pavilions connected by covered walkways, zigzag bridges, and moon gates give the garden a sense of mystery and discovery. Kids love crossing the bridges and peeking through the circular doorways. The stone lion sculptures at various entrances are popular photo spots.
The paths are paved and stroller-friendly, though some of the smaller bridges have steps that require lifting a stroller. The main loop around the lake is flat and accessible.
During the Gardens of Light event in fall, this section transforms with hundreds of illuminated lanterns. It's worth visiting in both daylight and after dark if your trip timing allows it.
Plan about an hour here as part of a broader Botanical Garden visit. The Chinese Garden connects to the Japanese Garden and the rest of the complex via well-marked paths. There are benches throughout for resting, and the covered pavilions provide shade on hot days.
