About
Oxbow Park and Zollman Zoo in Byron is one of those places that surprises people. It's a county park about 15 minutes outside Rochester, and everything is free — admission, parking, the zoo, all of it.
The Zollman Zoo houses native Minnesota animals that were rescued and can't survive in the wild. Bison, white-tailed deer, wolves, cougars, bald eagles, and raptors. The enclosures mimic natural habitats, and you get much closer views than at a big commercial zoo. The bison are massive up close and the wolf exhibit is always a favorite.
Beyond the zoo, Oxbow Park has miles of hiking trails along the Zumbro River. Trails range from easy paved paths (good for strollers) to rugged natural-surface trails for older kids. In summer, there are spots where kids can wade in the river — bring extra clothes.
The nature center is staffed with naturalists who run educational programs. Hands-on exhibits about local wildlife, geology, and the river ecosystem. Small but well-done.
The park has a campground too. Sites are affordable and the river setting is beautiful.
This is entirely outdoor. No indoor dining, no gift shop, limited rain shelter. Bring bug spray from May through September — mosquitoes along the river are fierce.
Strollers work on paved paths near the zoo but not on hiking trails. A baby carrier is better for trail exploration.
The 4.8-star rating with 2,000+ reviews tells you something. People drive from all over southern Minnesota to come here. It proves you don't need to spend money for an amazing outdoor experience with kids.
