Lummus Park

Lummus Park stretches along Ocean Drive from 5th Street to 14th Place, placing a free public park, playground, paved path, and beach access in one long South Beach outing. The park is open from sunrise until midnight every day. Families do not need tickets, but parking is restricted along Ocean Drive, so transportation can be the main arrival challenge.

The clearest family feature is the playground, which the city divides into areas for ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12. Equipment includes slides, climbing pieces, play panels, a fitness station, and tot, youth, and ADA swings over poured rubber surfacing. The paved beachfront path runs for about 10 blocks and is used by walkers, cyclists, runners, and skaters.

Older children may also notice the outdoor fitness areas and 18 sand volleyball courts.

Strollers work well on the paved path and around the playground. Moving onto the beach sand is harder, so decide whether the playground, the beach, or a path walk is the main goal before unloading everything. Public restrooms, drinking fountains, and beach wash stations are available around 6th, 10th, and 14th Streets. The official page does not confirm baby-changing tables or nursing space.

This is an exposed outdoor destination, not a rainy-day backup. Early morning is usually the easiest family window for heat and sun management. Before ocean activities, check the city's official beach conditions and water-quality information.

Lifeguards post warning flags for changing surf, currents, marine life, and other conditions. Park hours should not be treated as swimming or lifeguard hours.

A playground-only stop may take 60 to 90 minutes. Families combining play, a path walk, and time on the sand can easily spend three or four hours. Park and beach access are free, but transportation, food, equipment rentals, and special-event purchases are separate.

Because Lummus Park regularly hosts events, check the city calendar if you want a quieter visit. Pack water, sun protection, towels, and a change of clothes, then choose a restroom landmark as the family's meeting point.
