Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County gives families a mix of large display halls, hands-on discovery spaces, working science, and outdoor gardens. Dinosaur Hall is the main draw for many children. It contains more than 300 fossils, 20 mounted skeletons, and a rare T. rex growth series showing a baby, juvenile, and subadult.

Nearby, the Dinosaur Lab lets visitors watch fossil preparators remove rock from real specimens and learn how new discoveries are studied.

The Discovery Center is the strongest stop for younger children. Its Paleo Play Zone has a fossil dig area, while Bugtopia features live insects and the Moveable Museum lets children create nature scenes. Families can also explore gems, mammal dioramas, L.A. wildlife, and the Nature Gardens.

Programs such as live-animal meetings, garden exploration, films, and Dinosaur Encounters may be scheduled during the day. Some require a separate ticket, so check the official calendar before building your plan.

Most of the museum is indoors, making this a reliable hot-weather or rainy-day destination. The gardens add outdoor time when conditions are comfortable. Strollers can enter most exhibits, but they are not permitted inside the seasonal Butterfly and Spider Pavilion.

General admission is currently $18 for adults, $14 for youth ages 13 to 17, $7 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children 2 and under. The official site strongly recommends advance online tickets. The NHM Car Park costs $20, is credit-card only, and does not allow in-and-out parking.

Metro can reduce both parking stress and cost. Families should allow roughly half a day if they want Dinosaur Hall, the Discovery Center, several other galleries, and a food break. The museum does not publish a standard visit time, so choose a few priority exhibits rather than trying to cover everything.
