Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden

The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Arcadia is one of those places that doesn't feel like it should be in LA — 127 acres of botanical gardens, lagoons, themed gardens from around the world, and free-roaming peacocks in the middle of the San Gabriel Valley. It's peaceful in a way that most LA family destinations aren't.

The peacocks are worth talking about first, because they define the experience for kids. These aren't penned birds — they wander the entire property freely, appearing around corners, perching on signs, and occasionally spreading their full tail feathers in displays that stop everyone nearby cold. My kids spent more time chasing and observing peacocks than anything else in the gardens.

In spring mating season, the full displays are genuinely spectacular.

Beyond the peacocks, the arboretum has meaningful content for kids with any curiosity about nature. A lagoon with ducks and waterfowl. Display gardens organized by region — African, Australian, Mediterranean — that give kids a geographic context for plant life.

A Meadowbrook heritage area with historic structures. A miniature train that makes loops through portions of the property and is a big hit with young children.

Logistically, this is an outdoor, walking-heavy destination. Comfortable shoes and sun protection are essential. Strollers work on the paved main paths, though some garden areas are gravel or softer ground. The on-site cafe handles food, but packing a picnic for the lawn areas is more enjoyable and cost-effective.

Admission is reasonable, with kids under 5 free and LA County residents getting discounted rates. Third Tuesdays are free for county residents. The arboretum also runs seasonal events — check their calendar for evening events and specialty programs that add value to the admission.
