About
Praça do Comércio — also known as Terreiro do Paço — is Lisbon's most dramatic public square, and one of the best places in the city to take kids when you first arrive. Flanked by yellow arcaded buildings on three sides and the wide Tagus River on the fourth, the sheer scale of the space is what strikes you first. For families, that scale is a blessing: children can run, explore, and burn energy while parents soak in one of Europe's most beautiful waterfront settings.
The triumphal arch at the north end of the square leads into the old city center and is great for photos. Along the riverside promenade, you can watch ferries crossing to the south bank, spot the occasional cruise ship, and feel the Atlantic breeze coming off the water. The square is completely flat and stroller-friendly, with the wide cobblestone surface navigable even with smaller wheels.
Tram 28 and 15E both pass nearby, making this a useful transit hub for families. There are cafes and restaurants inside the arcade colonnades if you need a stop, though prices reflect the tourist location — Time Out Market a short walk away offers better value and more variety. The best time to visit is early morning, when the square is peaceful and the golden light hits the buildings beautifully.
Sunset is equally stunning if you prefer the evening.
