Oceanário de Lisboa

The Oceanário de Lisboa is consistently rated one of the best aquariums in Europe — and for good reason. The central tank, which holds 5 million liters of water, is an extraordinary feat of design that creates the illusion of a seamless open ocean inside a building. Kids standing at the base of the main tank as hammerhead sharks, sunfish, and manta rays drift past often go completely silent — which parents of young children will appreciate.

Beyond the central tank, the aquarium is organized around four distinct ocean ecosystem habitats: the North Atlantic, the Antarctic, the Tropical Pacific, and the Temperate Pacific. Each habitat is carefully recreated with appropriate flora and fauna, and the animal presentations are educational without being heavy-handed. Sea otters, penguins, and tropical fish in the individual habitats give kids multiple highlights across the visit.

The Oceanário sits in the Park of Nations district — the area developed for Expo 98 — which has a pleasant waterfront promenade and multiple restaurants. Plan for 2-3 hours inside the aquarium, then continue your day exploring the park. Book tickets online in advance, especially for summer and weekend visits, as queues at the door can be long.

Children under 3 are free. The facility is fully stroller-accessible with lifts between levels, and there is a nursing room available for parents with infants.
