Jardim da Praça do Império

Jardim da Praça do Império is a formal public garden in Belém, not a playground. It works best as a calm outdoor stop between larger sights. The city describes a central luminous fountain, a sundial, two ponds, sculpted horses with sea-creature tails, patterned planting, and artistic stone paving.

After a major renovation, the garden reopened in February 2023 with more green space, new trees, and a plant garden inspired by details carved into Jerónimos Monastery.

Children can turn a short walk into a visual scavenger hunt: find the sundial, count the horse sculptures, look for coats of arms in the paving, watch the fountain, and compare the garden's straight lines with the huge monastery across the road. There is no verified play equipment, so children expecting swings or climbing structures may be disappointed. Close adult supervision is important around the fountain and ponds.

It is fully outdoors, so it is better for a dry morning or late afternoon than a rainy day.
