Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum tells a major American story through baseball. Located in Kansas City's Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, the self-guided gallery connects Negro Leagues teams and players with the wider history of segregation, community life, opportunity, and social change. The museum uses text panels, hundreds of photographs, artifacts, oral history, and films rather than a play-space format.

Baseball-loving children will recognize the sport immediately, but the strongest fit is usually ages 7 to 16. Younger readers may need a parent to summarize longer panels and explain why Black players built their own leagues. Big kids, tweens, and teens can follow the timeline and look for personal stories, uniforms, signed baseballs, and game images.

The Field of Legends is a memorable centerpiece, with life-size statues arranged on a mock baseball diamond. Other displays highlight Buck O'Neil, women in the Negro Leagues, and a large collection of autographed baseballs.

The museum recommends at least one hour. Families who watch the films, read closely, and visit the Extra Innings Gift Shop may want 90 minutes to 2 hours. The galleries are indoors, making this a good heat, cold, or rain option.

Strollers are permitted, mobility devices may enter, a wheelchair can be checked out at security, and the main exhibit film has closed captions. Food, drinks, and chewing gum are not allowed in the gallery.

Admission is separate from the American Jazz Museum even though both are in the same building. A typical family with two adults and two children ages 5 to 12 pays 54 dollars. Children ages 0 to 4 and active military members enter free, and veterans have a reduced rate.

Current construction on the 18th Street pedestrian mall changes the easiest parking and entrance route. The museum directs drivers to free parking at the southwest corner of 18th and Paseo or behind the museum, then asks visitors to walk to a front or rear entrance. Review the current map before leaving so the construction does not become the hardest part of the visit.
