About
Monte Sano Nature Preserve is Huntsville's crown jewel for outdoor families, and the Bankhead Trailhead is one of the best starting points to access its extensive trail network. Sitting atop Monte Sano Mountain, the preserve covers thousands of acres of hardwood forest with trails ranging from easy, flat walks to more challenging climbs with rewarding views across the Tennessee Valley.
For families with kids, this is real hiking — not a paved nature walk. You'll cross rocky sections, navigate roots, and earn your elevation. That's exactly what makes it exciting for kids who are ready for a genuine outdoor challenge. The sense of accomplishment when a 7-year-old tops out on a ridgeline view is something that sticks with them.
Spring is arguably the best time to visit: the wildflowers are blooming, the temperatures are mild, and the creeks are running well. Fall brings spectacular color. Summer hiking here is possible but demands an early start — the mountain heats up fast and there's no shade escape once you're on exposed ridgelines.
Bring significantly more water than you think you'll need, especially with kids. There are no water sources or vendors on the trails, and children dehydrate faster than adults realize on mountain hikes. The AllTrails app has excellent coverage of the Monte Sano trail network and is worth downloading before you arrive. Entry to the nature preserve is free.
