Huntsville Botanical Garden

Huntsville Botanical Garden is a 118-acre living museum with meadows, woodland paths, aquatic gardens, educational spaces, and family attractions. It is large enough for a half-day outing, but families can also follow a shorter route. The Garden's official accessible highlights route takes 60 to 90 minutes and includes wide paths, shade, seating, restrooms, the Train Garden, and Pollinator Walk.

The Purdy Butterfly House is a major warm-weather draw. For 2026, butterflies are present from April 22 through October 11, although weather and maintenance can affect access. The Garden says butterflies are usually most active on sunny days between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM, with the strongest season from June through August.

Children should look without catching or handling them. Other family-friendly places named by the Garden include Tweetsville, Wicks Family Garden, the Mother Earth Troll Garden, and the miniature Garden Railway.

This is mainly an outdoor visit. Summer heat, rain, or storms can change the experience quickly, and the open-air butterfly habitat may close in poor conditions. The Anderson Education Center offers some indoor, air-conditioned space, but the Garden is not a strong all-day rainy-weather choice. Bring water, sun protection, and insect repellent.

Most primary paths are paved, wide, stable, and flat or gently sloped. Short connecting paths and trails may use gravel, mulch, or mixed terrain, which can be rougher for small stroller wheels, especially after rain. Free wheelchairs and mobility scooters are available in limited quantities, and an accessible tram is offered on certain days as a paid add-on.

Current admission is $20 for adults and $13 for children age 3 to 15; children age 2 and younger enter free. A typical two-adult, two-child family pays $66 before food or extras. The Garden is cashless.

Parking is located in front of the main entrance, and advance tickets are optional. Restrooms in several areas have infant and child changing tables, while the Anderson Education Center includes a private family restroom. Fern & Feast Bistro near the entrance provides sandwiches, salads, and seasonal food for a break before or after exploring.
