Pearl Harbor National Memorial Visitor Center

Pearl Harbor Visitor Center combines two museums, open-air grounds, a theater and access to the USS Arizona Memorial. Admission to the National Park Service grounds and museums is free. The main subject is the December 7, 1941 attack and the people affected by it, so this is a place for calm behavior and thoughtful family conversations.

All ages are welcome, but children around 7 and older will understand more of the history. The free Junior Ranger booklet gives them a clear purpose as they move through the exhibits and grounds.

The biggest planning choice is whether to add the USS Arizona Memorial program. The 30- to 45-minute program uses a US Navy vessel and depends on weather, safety and transportation conditions. Free reservations are strongly recommended through Recreation.gov, which charges a $1 non-refundable management fee per ticket.

NPS asks reserved visitors to arrive one hour before their program and check in at the theater 10 minutes before departure. Families without reservations can join the standby callback list, but NPS warns that the wait may reach several hours on busy days.

Arrival rules matter here. Bags that can conceal items are prohibited, including purses, backpacks, fanny packs, camera bags and diaper bags larger than the stated limit. Paid bag storage is available near the entrance.

Parents can carry diaper supplies in a clear sealable bag. Strollers and wagons are welcome around the visitor center but must stay at the pre-boarding area before the Navy vessel. Bring a baby carrier for the memorial, and use the restroom before boarding because none is available after departure.

The visitor center is open-air, while the two museums and theater provide indoor breaks. Heat, rain or strong winds can affect comfort and boat service, so this is not a fully weather-proof outing. Parking costs $7 per day.

A small shop sells snacks and cold drinks, and water fountains are available. Plan about two hours for the visitor center alone or up to four hours with the museums, Junior Ranger work and a reserved memorial program.
