North Carolina Zoo

The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is one of the most impressive zoo experiences in the entire Southeast — and one of the largest natural habitat zoos in the world. Located about 90 minutes from Charlotte and an hour from Raleigh, this is a destination visit that requires real commitment, but delivers an experience that few zoos in the country can match.

With over 500 acres and more than 1,000 animals representing 250+ species, the NC Zoo is genuinely too large to see completely in one visit. The Africa and North America sections are the two main regions, each covering hundreds of acres with animals in habitats that prioritize naturalistic environments over traditional zoo display. African elephants roam a massive savanna habitat.

Gorilla troops live in forested enclosures. Polar bears have a sprawling habitat in the Polar Frontier section that gives them real space to swim and move.

For families with young children, the scale requires planning. Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable — parents consistently underestimate how much walking this zoo involves. Bring a stroller for any child under 7 even if they normally walk, because 4+ hours of walking is genuine physical endurance for young legs.

A loaded cooler with lunch, snacks, and drinks saves significant money compared to on-site food pricing.

Arrival at the 9am opening is highly recommended. Morning is when the animals are most active, the temperature is most comfortable, and crowds are lightest. The two most popular sections — Polar Frontier and Africa — fill with visitors by late morning on weekends. Doing these first gives you the best sightlines before the crowd builds.

The NC Zoo annual family membership is one of the best family entertainment values in North Carolina. At roughly $100–$125, it covers unlimited visits for a year. One visit with a family of four costs $80–$100 in admission alone, making the membership pay for itself in two visits.
