About

Mercado 28 is Cancun's most well-known souvenir and craft market, located in downtown Cancun about 20 minutes from the Hotel Zone. It's a sprawling maze of stalls selling everything from silver jewelry and hammocks to hand-painted ceramics, embroidered dresses, and vanilla extract.

For families, the appeal goes beyond shopping. This is one of the few places in Cancun where kids can experience a traditional Mexican market atmosphere. The colors, sounds, and energy are completely different from the polished shopping malls in the Hotel Zone. Stalls are packed tight, vendors call out greetings, and the whole place smells like leather and spices.

Kids tend to gravitate toward specific things: lucha libre masks (the colorful wrestling masks are irresistible — plan on buying at least one), mini sombreros, wooden toy swords, and woven bracelets. Most vendors will let kids handle items, and bargaining is part of the fun. For tweens and teens, giving them a set budget and letting them negotiate their own purchases is genuinely educational.

The food court at the back of the market is worth a stop. Local vendors serve tacos, tortas, fresh juices, and traditional Mexican dishes at prices that are a fraction of Hotel Zone restaurants. The food is authentic and portions are generous. Most stalls can accommodate basic kids' requests like quesadillas or simple tacos.

Stroller navigation is possible but challenging. The aisles between stalls are narrow in places, and the ground is uneven in some sections. If you can, carry younger kids or use a compact umbrella stroller. The market has a covered roof, so it works as a rainy day option, though it gets warm inside since there's no AC.

Safety-wise, keep an eye on your belongings — it's a busy market and pickpocketing can happen, as in any crowded tourist market worldwide. But the vendors are generally friendly and the atmosphere is safe for families.

Take a taxi from the Hotel Zone (agree on a fare before getting in, or use a taxi meter). The ride should cost around $10-$15 USD each way.

The market's own food court serves tacos, tortas, and fresh juices at great prices. Parque de las Palapas, a 10-minute walk away, has additional street food vendors and sit-down restaurants.

Why Kids Love It

Kids go wild for the lucha libre wrestling masks — every stall has them in bright colors and kids can try them on. The piñatas hanging from ceilings are a hit with little ones. Tweens and teens enjoy bargaining for their own souvenirs, which feels like a real-world adventure.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Arrive before 11 AM on weekdays for the least crowded experience
  • Set a souvenir budget per kid before walking in — everything looks tempting
  • Haggle respectfully — vendors expect it, and starting at 50% of asking price is normal
  • The food court in the back has the best-value authentic food in the area
  • Bring a reusable bag — vendors use thin plastic bags that tear easily

What to Bring

  • Cash in pesos — better prices than paying with USD or cards
  • A reusable shopping bag for purchases
  • Water bottles — it gets warm inside
  • A compact stroller if bringing a toddler (full-size won't fit well)

Tips to Save

  • Haggling is expected — start at 50% of the asking price and work up from there.
  • Compare prices between stalls before buying since many sell similar items.
  • Eat at the food court in the back rather than Hotel Zone restaurants to save significantly on lunch.
