About

Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Massachusetts, sits just 20 minutes north of Boston and is run by Zoo New England — the same organization that operates Franklin Park Zoo. At 26 acres, Stone Zoo is notably smaller than its sister zoo, which turns out to be a genuine advantage for families with young children. Everything is walkable in a half-day without exhausting small legs or parental patience.

The animal collection is carefully curated with a North American focus. The Yukon Creek exhibit is the showpiece — a large indoor-outdoor habitat housing wolverines, mountain lions, reindeer, and caribou. The wolverine is a rarely-seen animal at most zoos, and Stone Zoo gives you excellent viewing opportunities.

Kids tend to be completely transfixed by these animals, particularly the wolverines who are often pacing, investigating, or playing.

The reindeer herd is a year-round draw, but they become particularly magical during the holiday season. Zoo Lights — the annual holiday illumination event — is one of the most beloved family events in Greater Boston and draws enormous crowds. Tickets sell out for weekend dates, sometimes weeks in advance. Weeknight visits during Zoo Lights are the strategic move.

Stroller access throughout the zoo is solid, with paved paths and smooth terrain. Nursing and diaper changing facilities are available in the main building. The on-site cafe has standard zoo food. A Zoo New England family membership covering both Stone and Franklin Park zoos pays for itself in about two visits and makes spontaneous drop-ins much easier.

Plan to arrive by 10am on weekends to beat the crowds and catch animals at their most active.

Why Kids Love It

Stone Zoo's compact 26-acre layout means young kids don't get overwhelmed — you can genuinely see everything in a morning without a meltdown. The reindeer are a perennial hit, particularly during the winter holiday season. The indoor Yukon Creek exhibit (featuring wolverines, mountain lions, and caribou) is spectacular in any weather, and kids often spend 20+ minutes at the windows watching the wolverines move.

From Reddit Parents

The Stone Zoom could EASILY be a cash cow if they had better management and marketing.
