About
Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is a free nature stop inside Wachirabenchathat Park, also called Rot Fai Park. The main draw is a planted, walk-through butterfly habitat where children can watch live butterflies move among flowers, food plants and water features. Exhibition areas add simple lessons about insect life cycles, biodiversity and the role butterflies play in an ecosystem.
Bangkok’s park department created the site as a nature classroom for children, young people and other interested visitors.
This works especially well for ages 2 to 10. Toddlers can follow the color and movement without needing to read every sign. Older children can connect what they see to eggs, caterpillars, pupae, nectar plants and conservation.
The current Bangkok Learning City page also identifies the venue as suitable for infants, children ages 2 to 6 and school-age visitors. Babies can come along, but the official pages do not publish a stroller policy or information about changing and nursing spaces.
Plan about 45-90 minutes for the insectarium itself. Add another hour or two if the family wants to use the surrounding park, which officially lists a playground, walking and cycling areas, picnic space, restrooms and parking. The insectarium is in the park’s southeastern section, so reaching the correct building can take longer than expected.
BTS Mo Chit and several nearby MRT stations provide alternatives to driving.
The main planning issue is the schedule. A recently updated Chatuchak Metro Park page says the insectarium is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and closed Monday. Bangkok Learning City lists the same hours every day.
Treat Monday as uncertain and call first. Walk-in families register at the entrance, while groups need advance permission. The butterfly dome gives useful cover in rain, though the route through the park remains outdoors.
Morning visits are more comfortable in Bangkok heat and leave time for the park afterward.

Plan Your Visit
Best Time to Visit
Tuesday through Friday morning, when the park is cooler and the Monday schedule conflict does not apply
Wait Times
No official queue estimate is published. Walk-in visitors register at the entrance.
Nearby Food
Wachirabenchathat Park officially lists picnicking, but the insectarium pages do not identify a café or meal counter. Plan food outside the exhibit and follow staff instructions about where eating is allowed.
Why Kids Love It
Butterflies fly through a planted walk-through habitat, so children can watch them land, feed and move at close range instead of seeing insects only behind glass.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Avoid Monday unless staff confirms the insectarium is open; two current BMA pages disagree about Monday service.
- Walk-in families must register at the entrance. Groups should contact the facility several working days ahead.
- Allow extra time to find the insectarium inside the large park. It is in the southeastern section of Wachirabenchathat Park.
- Keep hands gentle and let butterflies approach on their own. Do not touch wings or plants.
What to Bring
- Water for the walk through the park
- Light clothing for Bangkok heat and humidity
