About

Musée de la Magie is one of Paris's most distinctive small museums, occupying the vaulted cellars beneath the Marais district that once belonged to the Marquis de Sade. The museum houses one of the largest collections of magic memorabilia in the world — antique cabinets of illusion, mechanical automata, magic posters from the golden age of stage magic, and personal props from legendary illusionists including Houdini. The stone vaulted rooms give the collection an atmosphere that a modern building could never create — the low ceilings, flickering light, and ancient walls make everything feel genuinely mysterious.

The highlight of any visit is the live magic show included with admission, performed by a resident magician in one of the vaulted chambers. Shows run at set times and last about 30 minutes, mixing classic close-up magic with larger illusions. Children aged 5 to 13 are consistently the most captivated visitors — the age range at which magic feels genuinely possible.

Interactive stations allow visitors to try simple sleight-of-hand tricks themselves before leaving. The museum is located in the Marais, close to Place des Vosges, making it an easy add-on to a Marais afternoon. The narrow stairs and uneven stone floors mean strollers are not practical; a carrier is better for very young children.

Admission includes both the museum galleries and one live performance.
