About
Island Recreation Vaires-Torcy, known in French as the Base de Loisirs de Vaires-Torcy, is a large outdoor recreation area built around a lake complex east of Paris, originally developed as a venue for the 1976 World Rowing Championships. The site spans over 200 hectares and offers an impressive range of family-friendly activities centered on water, nature, and open-air sport.
Families arrive for the beaches, the kayak and pedalo rentals, the cycling paths, and the open picnic lawns that line the waterfront. Kids with plenty of energy can move between swimming areas, paddle boats, and beach volleyball, while younger children are happy to build sandcastles along the lake's sandy banks. Older kids and teens gravitate toward water sports rentals and more challenging cycling routes.
The base de loisirs model — a French regional leisure park concept — means that entry to the grounds is low-cost or free, with individual activities available at additional charge. This makes it a genuinely flexible option for families with different budgets. You can spend an entire afternoon here with nothing more than a picnic blanket and enjoy the space at zero cost.
The site is well served by RER line E to Vaires-sur-Marne station, putting it within reach of Paris without a car. Parking is also available for those driving from further afield. This is one of the most genuinely spacious family outdoor destinations within the greater Paris region.
