About
Twin Falls is the best free family adventure on Maui, and it's the first major stop on the famous Road to Hana — which means you can combine it with a Hana day trip or make it a standalone morning activity. The hike is short enough for younger kids but rewarding enough that tweens and teens won't be bored.
The trail starts at Mile Marker 2 on Hana Highway, where a small farm stand sells fresh tropical fruit, banana bread, and coconut water. Stock up here — the owners ask for a small donation to pass through their land, and it's absolutely worth it. The trail winds through dense jungle, crosses small streams on stepping stones, and passes through bamboo groves before reaching the first waterfall in about 20-30 minutes.
The lower falls have a gorgeous pool where kids can wade in and splash. The water is cold and clear on most days, making it a perfect payoff after the hike in the tropical heat. A second trail leads to the upper falls, which require more scrambling and are better suited for older kids and adults comfortable on uneven, sometimes muddy terrain.
This is not a stroller trail — the ground is too uneven and the stream crossings make it impossible. Water shoes or old sneakers are essential; flip flops slip on the rocks near the falls. The entire out-and-back for the lower falls is about 1.5 miles, manageable for most kids 5 and up.
Parking fills up fast — locals know that after 9 AM on weekends the roadside pull-off is full and you'll be driving back looking for a spot. Arrive early, especially on holiday weekends. Don't swim if water levels are high or the water looks muddy — rainfall upstream can cause rapid changes in water conditions.

Why Kids Love It
Twin Falls is the perfect intro hike for kids — a short, rewarding trail through jungle and bamboo that ends at actual swimming waterfalls where kids can wade and splash. The two main falls are genuinely beautiful, and the pools beneath them are perfect for cooling off after the hike. Kids feel like they're discovering something secret and magical.
Pro Tips from Parents

- Wear water shoes or old sneakers — you'll cross streams and get wet near the falls
- The lower falls are easier; the upper falls require more scrambling — assess your kids' ability before going higher
- Stop at the fruit stand at the trailhead for fresh coconut, banana bread, and local fruit — it's a highlight for kids
