About
Honokowai Beach Park on Maui's west side is one of those local spots that tourists often drive right past on their way to Ka'anapali. That's a mistake if you've got kids who love exploring tide pools and want a quieter alternative to the big resort beaches.
The beach itself is rocky rather than sandy, which means it's not the place for building sandcastles. What it IS great for is tide pool exploration. At low tide, the rocky shoreline reveals pools full of small fish, crabs, sea urchins, and other marine life. For kids, it's like a free, natural aquarium. Bring water shoes — the rocks are rough on bare feet.
Sea turtles (honu) sometimes swim in the shallows here. If you spot one, it's an incredible moment for kids. Hawaii law requires staying at least 10 feet away, but even from that distance, seeing a wild sea turtle is magical.
The park has a grassy area with some shade that's perfect for picnics and relaxing. There are basic facilities but no food vendors. Most visitors in this area stay at the nearby condo resorts along the coast and bring their own food.
The water is generally calmer here than at the big open beaches, making it more comfortable for wading with young children. It's not really a swimming beach — the rocky bottom and shallow reef make it better suited for wading and snorkeling on calm days.
Honokowai Beach Park is free with no admission or parking fees. Open from 7 AM to 8 PM. It's on the coast between Lahaina and Ka'anapali, making it convenient if you're staying on the west side of Maui.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen (it's Hawaii law), water shoes, and your own snacks and water. The Honokowai area has a few small restaurants and convenience stores along Lower Honoapiilani Rd.
For a quieter, more educational beach experience with kids, this beats the crowded resort beaches. It's not a full day destination, but it's a solid 1-3 hour stop that gives kids a different kind of ocean experience.

Why Kids Love It
The rocky shoreline creates natural tide pools where kids can spot sea creatures — crabs, small fish, sea urchins. It's like a free outdoor aquarium. The water is generally calmer than the big sandy beaches, and the grass area gives kids a place to play when they're done with the water. Sea turtles are sometimes spotted in the shallows, which absolutely blows kids' minds.
