About

Firehole Falls is one of Yellowstone's most scenic and underrated family stops — a dramatic 40-foot waterfall set within the narrow walls of Firehole Canyon, accessible via a one-way scenic road that winds through some of the park's most striking volcanic terrain. The canyon walls of dark basalt rise steeply on either side of the river, framing the falls in a way that feels more like a slot canyon than the wide-open geyser basins that most visitors associate with Yellowstone.

For families, the stop has an added bonus: the Firehole Swimming Area is located just downstream. This is one of the very few designated swimming spots inside Yellowstone National Park — a warm, relatively calm stretch of river where the geothermal heating of the water keeps temperatures comfortable even in midsummer. Kids who have spent days watching geothermal features from boardwalks but haven't been able to touch any thermal water absolutely love this.

It transforms from an observation experience into an interactive one.

Firehole Canyon Drive is a one-way road, so plan accordingly — enter from the south end off the Grand Loop Road. The drive itself is beautiful and worth taking slowly. The short walk to the falls viewpoint is manageable for children who can walk unassisted, though the terrain is not stroller-accessible.

The swimming area is open in summer when water temperatures and river levels are appropriate. The park service monitors conditions and may close the area during high water. Check current conditions before making it the centerpiece of your plan.
