About
Wild Lights is the St. Louis Zoo's seasonal holiday light display, and it's become one of the most popular family traditions in the area. The zoo fills its grounds with millions of LED lights shaped into animal displays, walk-through light tunnels, and themed scenes that change every year.
The event runs from late November through early January, typically Thursday through Sunday evenings. Gates open at 5:30pm and close around 8:30pm. The route takes you through a good portion of the zoo grounds — plan on 1.5-2.5 hours to see everything at a relaxed pace.
This is a ticketed event, separate from regular zoo admission. Prices range from about $12 on weeknights to $18 on peak weekend nights. Kids under 2 are free. For a family of 4, you're looking at $50-80 total including parking and snacks.
The light displays are honestly impressive. This isn't some half-effort string of lights — it's a full production with animated displays, color-changing tunnels, and themed areas. Little kids (2-6) are absolutely spellbound.
Food options inside are limited to seasonal stands — hot chocolate, apple cider, s'mores kits, kettle corn. The s'mores fire pits are a highlight for kids. Eat a real dinner before you come.
The biggest mistake families make is showing up at 7pm on a Saturday in December. If you can go on a Thursday or early Sunday, you'll have a much better experience.
Dress warm. Really warm. You're walking outside for up to 2 hours with no heated indoor areas. Layers, warm socks, hats, gloves — don't skip any of it.
