Fossil Land

Fossil Land is a unique outdoor activity destination located in Patarra on the outskirts of the San José metropolitan area. For kids who have ever dreamed of being a paleontologist, this is the closest thing to the real thing — a hands-on fossil digging experience set in the Costa Rican countryside.

Visitors participate in guided fossil excavation activities where children use real tools to uncover fossil replicas embedded in the soil. The process teaches kids about prehistoric life, geological time, and the basics of archaeological fieldwork in a way that no classroom exhibit can replicate. The dry season from December through April offers the most comfortable conditions, while the rainy season can make outdoor dig areas muddy and less enjoyable. The location in Patarra requires a drive from central San José, so build in travel time.
